Northern lights are currently illuminating cinema screens across Scotland in a new initiative between the Nordic Council and Dundee Contemporary Arts. The Nordic Children’s Film Festival is part of a wider aim by Network North to build bridges between the UK and Scandinavia, which has included the N55 art project Shop covered earlier this month by The List. Scotland’s co-ordinator Mairi Thomas, cinema development officer at DCA says she is ‘passionate’ about children’s films and feels that Scandinavian countries have got the right attitude. ‘Scandinavian countries have a different funding structure and a different culture,’ she says. ‘The government money that’s available for children’s film production is on average a stipulated 25% of the state budget.’ This commitment to children’s film making is widely recognised. ‘Their films are typically the ones that walk away with the prizes at all the children’s film festival awards around the world’, says Thomas. You will be able to see some of these award winners at Edinburgh’s Filmhouse and Stirling’s MacRobert (DCA’s showings were earlier in the month), including Scars which scooped the children’s and adult jury prizes at this year’s Berlin Kinderfilmfest. Thomas describes the drama of a 13-year-old boy coming to terms with difficult family secrets as ‘soulful’. For younger ones highlights include Circleen, Mice and Romance and

Fairy Tales for Wee Ones.
