BEVERLEY KNIGHT

Competition is a healthy thing. You’d think Beverley Knight, a woman with

three MOBOs, a Top Ten album (Who I

Am) and one of the best pop singles

of the year (‘Shoulda Woulda

Coulda’) under her hip-hugging belt

wouldn’t be scared by it. So why was the release of forthcoming single ‘Shape of You - Reshaped' put back to January? ‘Have you seen the charts over the next few weeks?’ she squawks. ‘lt’s a time when everyone has to compete - and that’s good but you know how

the charts get at Christmas. There’s Pop Idols and Pop Stars and we just

thought it would be best to let that

stuff get out of the way and get it out

later. Otherwise it’s hard for artists

who are a bit deeper than superficial

pop.’ The single, a reworked version of

album track ‘Shape of You’, features ex- Fugee Wyclef. ‘He’s a nutter - he’s off

his rocker but he’s a great guy to work with. We were just going to remix the track, but we got really into it and decided to totally redo it.‘

The Wolverhampton-born singer has been working on the follow up to Who lAm over the past few months, a period that’s also seen her visit Brazil for Christian Aid and pick up a Mercury nomination. But what’s she really excited about is a visit to sunny Glasgow. ‘I’m a happy Bev right now,’ she says. ‘l’m really looking forward to playing fire Barrowland - you’ve got to that in because I am genuin f; excited about the gig.’ (Jame - ' mart) I :1} y" K!‘e‘g.’7f plays Barrow ', C.
