HOUSE OSUNLADE Audio Deluxe, the Honeycomb, Edinburgh, Sat 14 Dec

x

,. x“ ‘3" . -11.“...

Audio Deluxe promoter Fleur Woolford is rarely unenthusiastic about her guests. But she has particularly fond memories of one night in April when Puerto Rico-based DJ Osunlade played the club. ‘It was incredible,’ she says. ‘It was like having this beneficent witch doctor presiding over the night. A lot of industry people were there and usually you get them all standing at the back but that night everyone was in a mess on the dancefloor.’

That night Osunlade worked the decks dressed in a large cloak with a pin through his nose. But whatever you do, don’t accuse him of dressing up for the occasion. ‘lt’s not a costume, man, it’s my regular attire,’ he says. ‘lt’s just that, since 9/11 especially, you can’t travel on the plane dressed like that.’

Osunlade lived in New York for a number of years, working with Patti LaBelle and Lauryn Hill as well as producing music for Sesame Street. His debut album, Paradigm, released earlier this year on Soul Jazz records, fused deep house with an assortment of world sounds. As an ordained priest in the African religion of lfa, he also leads a busier spiritual life than many DJs - he named his Yoruba Records label after the Yoruba culture of Nigeria and Benin.

His choice of tunes shouldn’t be too obvious either. ‘1 just play really good music,’ he says. ‘Obviously house, but there’s a real Afro- Brazilain feel too. I might play some jazz, electro, even some folk. It depends on what I’m feeling and what the crowd are feeling.’

Osunlade (yes, it is on his passport) hasn’t played the UK often; partly, he suggests because he doesn’t like to ‘wear places out’. But he does seem happy to have moved away from the US. ‘The scene is very small. It’s not widespread and it’s not conducive to other things. There’s not a big demographic for it. You need people who really feel the emotion and feel the music and don’t like getting everything spoonfed to them. But it’s changing, it will change in time.’
