One Hour Photo ( IS) .00 (Mark Romanek. 1S. 2002) Robin Williams. ('onnie Nielsen. liriq La Salle. 95min. Sy Parrish. a lonely photo technician who finds joy in the precious moments of other people's lives. most notably a picture- perfcct famin who've visited the Savmart mini-lab where Sy' works since the birth of their nine-year-old son. His own life devoid of colour and humanity. as represented by his working environment - the great white church of consumerism Sy' tries to take his place in the frame of the ideal family. When he finds the picture to be less than perfect. Sy takes matters into his own considerany psychotic hands. The casting of Robin Williams is inspired - likcable because he‘s good old Mrs Doubtlire and terrifying for the same reason. clear cut. however. ('ineworld. lialkirk. The Pianist ( 15) .0. (Roman Polanski. 1'K/1’rance/( ierniany/Nelherlands/ Poland. 2002) Adrien Brody. 1-‘rank l-‘indlay. Maureen l.ipman. 1-19min. An intensely personal film front acclaimed Polish director Polanski. as he himself survived the Krakow ghetto. The Pianist follows the persecution of the Jews in Warsaw during World War II. The locus is on brilliant Polish pianist Wladyslaw S/pilman (Brody) who escapes deportation to an extermination camp and is left struggling for survival in the wasteland that's left of Warsaw. Adapted from S/pilman's memoirs and making me of Polanski‘s own childhood memories. "The Pianist is undoubtedly a brave and ambitious project. Althotigh rewarded by its winning the Palme d'()r at last year's ('annes l‘ilm l‘cstival. it is. however. debatable whether this film won on its worthiness rather than it being a coherent and compelling narrative. The Pledge ( 15) 0... (Sean Penn. IS. 2001 ) Jack Nicholson. Robin Wright- Penn. Sam Shepard. 123mm. In the cold mountain reaches of Nevada the body of a little girl is found. raped and murdered. A simple-minded Native American is swiftly taken into custody and a confession is extracted. following which the man kills himself. An open and shut case . . . for everyone but Jerry Black (an admirably low key Nicholson). a retiring police oflicer who thinks they have the wrong man. (‘ouched in the conventions of a thriller. Penn's third film as director is first and foremost a compelling psychological study of a middle-aged man attempting to give his life meaning post-retirement. Jer/y and Mary ()lson Kromolowski's script. adapted from l’riedrich l)tirrcnmatt's novel. keeps things ambiguous. In fact. (‘aine. whose performance is remarkably restrained and beautifully modulated. based his part. Thomas Fowler. a jaded British newspaper correspondent in Saigon at the end of the French 1ndo-(‘hina colonial period. on (lreene himself. ()deon ('ity (‘entrc. (ilasgow; MacRoben. Stirling. Rabbit Proof Fence (PG) 0000 (Philip Noyce. Australia. 2002) liverlyn Sampi. Kenneth Branagh. David (ittlpilil. 04min. It's the humanity of Noyce's storytelling which is the most salient feature of this film about Atistralia's Stolen (leneration. The didacticism of this true story of the abduction of three aboriginal children from their tribe. and their resettlement at a prison-like camp for the
