SPECTATOR

HORSE-RACING

Ever since Audrey Hepburn delivered the classic ‘move your bloomin’ arse’ line in My Fair Lady, going to the races is something I’ve always fancied doing. So here I am, Musselburgh Racecourse in December, stake money in one hand, race card in the other.

I arrive midway through the first of six half-hourly races having fallen into the trap of getting a train from Edinburgh to Musselburgh (it's about a 25 minute walk from the station) but this does enable me to get my bearings and see how the seasoned pros go about it.

Making my way towards the grandstand, I’m confronted by rows and rows of bookies vying for my hard-earned cash. But first things first: which one of these horses is going to make my fortune? I know nothing about their form and hearing myself saying ‘he’s nice . . .’ as the horses trot out in the parade ring is nothing short of surreal.

Like most first-time goers though, i decide to pick the nag that sounds the most appealing. Mumaris or Gralmano? Brace yourselves bookies, there’s a £2 bet coming your way. Oh what the hell, I’ll put £2 on each.

So here’s the deal. If Mumaris wins I stand to win £14 but if Gralmano wins only £3. Yellow and red stars versus the black and white. And they’re off. Watching from the stand, there’s an air of great excitement and to my surprise Mumaris is in front. The adrenaline sets in and by the last furlong my impression of Eliza Doolittle is coming on a treat.

Mumaris came second. I won £3 but lost £7 in total. Okay, so I didn’t make a fortune but of course, there’s always next time. (Helen Monaghan)
