GILAD ATZMON AND THE ORIENT HOUSE ENSEMBLE Saxophonist Gilad Atzmon has been a fairly regular visitor to Scotland in recent times, and returns on the back of his newest album with his Orient House Ensemble. Atzmon has never been slow to speak his mind on controversial matters, and Exile is a powerful political statement as well as a searing fusion of contemporary jazz with striking influences from his Jewish patrimony. The saxophonist is an Israeli living in London, and describes the album as ‘a call for attention to Palestinian suffering. Jewish history is an endless story of

persecution. so how is it that people who have suffered so much can inflict so much pain. and be so blind to the same desire for return in the Palestinians?’

Atzmon leads a six-piece instrumental line-up featuring violin and accordion in addition to his own saxophones and clarinet and the standard rhythm section,

augmented by the powerful singing of Reem Kelani. (Kenny Mathieson)
