POUND UP

QUEER AS 18TH CENTURY FOLK Gay brothels where men dressed up as pregnant women and gave birth to dolls, male politicians in love with simple country boys, Queen Anne lusting after her lady of the bedchamber, a lesbian Yorkshire marriage . . . fascinating material and times, but just a shame it’s packaged in Neil Crombie’s uninspiring

An overdressed actor does 18th century camp

reductive documentary Queer as 18th Century Folk (Channel 4, Thu 8 May, 9pm), the latest in the Georgian Underworld series.

Historians talk directly to camera, diary extracts are read aloud, while overdressed actors mime out historical recreations. Of course, camp music accompanies this - from Patsy Cline to the Pet Shop Boys - just to show gay life hasn‘t really changed. Anna Chancellor’s chirpy commentary sounds as if she‘s auditioning for Eurotrash. History has never been as one dimensional and dull.

If you are looking for gay contemporary relevance, better to spend your money on The Virgin Gay Guide (Tim Laming, Wrgin Books, £12.99). Huge, informative and eclectic, the book guarantees variety on all matters gay from legislation and news to icons and sex and is written by Tim Laming, editor of gay freebie NOW.
