CONSIDER RATHER THE RIVER Water of Leith from Theatre Workshop. Edinburgh, until Sun 22 Jun

It s midsummer and the sprites are out the river goblins and woodland faeries flitting about in the late evening sun. Down on the Water of Leith strange things have been spotted bobbing up and down, running in and out of the undergrowth and conspiring by the old mill. It could be the river spirits but it might also be some of the 100«strong cast of Theatre Workshop‘s annual community play. Consider Rather the River. This year the company is making a departure from the norm with its first ever promenade piece, devised to wind along the Water of Leith from Stockbridge, along to Dean Village and finally

emerging in Belgrave gardens.

‘Very quickly you enter into another realm, a magical world both physically beSIde the river and also into the story world that we're creating,‘ says director Morven Gregor. ‘lt‘s following the journey of three young people and their

adventures.‘

These magical elements are combined with historical encounters. ‘At one point they meet some revolutionaries at the mills. During the French revolution there was a kind of "solidarity society" in Edinburgh who actually did meet

down there.‘ she says.

As well as the stories, magic and drama, this is a good chance to gain access to hidden aspects of the river that are usually closed off. St Bernard’s Well WIII be opened up and lit by candlelight and private gardens are to be accessed with the promise of flying, pyrotechnics and circus skills thrown into the bargain. Just don‘t go kissing any asses or is that another midsummer

night‘s dream? (Ruth Hedges)
