ln days of yore, Japan‘s Samurais loved nothing more than cutting each other to shreds while quoting The Art of War. But peace, as the armaments industry knows, is a terrible thing, and when Japan was unified around 1600, members of the warrior class had to channel their energies into something a little less bloodthirsty. Swordsmanship had always been about ritual, as well as combat, and by the 18th century, practice armour and the shinai, a bamboo blade, meant that noblemen could duel without risk of serious injury.
The martial art, which came to be known as kendo, was compulsory in Japanese schools for many years. Since the founding of the International Kendo Federation in 1970, it has enjoyed increasing popularity in Europe, the US and Brazil. Indeed, while it remains very much a fringe sport, there are now 12 million participants around the globe. It is, let's face it, a hell of a lot sexier
than fencing.
There has long been a spiritual side of the form: Samurais equate their own disregard for danger with Buddhist ideas that the boundary between life and death is illusory. Many modern practitioners are as keen on Zen as they are on hitting their opponents. But the atmosphere in Kelvin Hall is unlikely to be overly contemplative - competitors shout when they make a hit, channelling their energy in a way that won’t be wholly alien to Venus Williams.
These are the 12th championships, and the first to take place in the UK since 1976. With 500 competitors from 43 countries taking part and several thousand spectators expected, they could well be the biggest ever. (James Smart)
