cLAscow MELA Kelvingrove Park. Sun 27 Jul

Becoming a regular event on the summer calendar. Glasgow‘s Mela is back again for a day of multicultural fun. Under the organisation of the Scottish Academy of Asian Arts. it is back for its forth year and has grown from a small event into this year‘s nine-hour festival.

With over 15,000 people expected. the SAAA has pulled together a diverse mix of music, dance. arts and crafts from around the world. The music headliners for the day are bhangra fusion band Stereo Nation, who will be supported by the Black Star Steel Band. Reel Rhythm, Partick Beat and Punjabi Number One. Dance acts will include performances from Glasgow's Dance Asia and Kultyer Dance Theatre.

‘It gives all the different cultural communities the opportunity to show a bit of their culture to the wider community.‘ says Caralin Montgomery- Cichy, co-ordinator of the SAAA. As well as being a multicultural event. it is also a family day with an entertainment marquee. puppet and magic shows and a funfair. An arts marquee will also showcase work by local community groups and there will be plenty to buy at the various clothes and jewellery stalls. You can even try out some new styles of cuisine at the South Asian food marquee and the European and South American stands.

If you want to know what the festival is all about. there‘s a mini-mela on Buchanan Street on Saturday 24 July from 2—4pm with the Black Star Steel Band and Dance Asia showing some Bollywood style. (Jane Hamilton)
