Once upon a time there was a hardy band of comedians who didn‘t ‘do‘ Jongleurs. It was beneath their artistic sensibility to play a venue where tried- and-tested material triumphed over the alternative and innovative. But the reputation of the Glasgow branch, which opened in January 2001, has gone some way towards chipping away that tired association. Receptive audiences in growing numbers aided by a strong contingent of

comedyelistcouk

local comedians (step forward Stu Who?, Craig Hill, Frankie Boyle and Reverend Obadiah) - have made the venue not half bad. It attracts an entirely different audience to the Stand. so there can be no worries over the new Jongleurs’ proximity to the heart of Scottish comedy at York Place.

The opening weekend of the Edinburgh site is a good indicator of things to come: there's the hyperactive nonsensity of Adam Bloom, the gurning Yorkshire mirth of Paul Tonkinson and the wicked charm of Stephen K Amos. With 100 and 300 seater venues. Jongleurs has a full-to-bursting festival programme. It includes Keith Carter’s Scouse character ‘Nige’. Steve Furst (aka Lenny Beige) and the streetwise bite of Rudi Lickwood. Late night laughs have become a festival mainstay and headliners for the 10pm slot will be of the Adam Hills. Andy Parsons and Gina Yashere breed.

Air-conditioned and boasting swankier surrounds than those oft found in comedy circles. Jongleurs is ripe to make its mark in Edinburgh. No sweat.
