High fashion and hard science are not, you might think, easy bedfellows. Primitive Streak, the work of former fashion designer Helen Storey and her sister Kate, a biologist, brings the two disciplines together in an attempt to chart the growth of a human embryo over its first 1,000 hours.

‘I had just left the fashion industry, and was looking for something that was more design-based than running a business,‘ says Storey. ‘The Wellcome Trust had just started a project called ‘Sciart‘, and we were one of the recipients of the first prizes. Although it seemed like an unlikely collaboration at the beginning, they seemed to like the idea so we took it from there. Kate and I knew very little of each other’s worlds, perhaps personally, and certainly professionally. So it was a sort of getting together again of two sisters, if you like, as much as it was art and science getting together.‘

The fruits of the Storey sisters‘ labour are little short of astonishing if viewed as high-concept fashion, and (perhaps surprisingly) manage to illustrate the key stages in early embryo development, so serving as an accessible

educational tool.

‘I think one of the reasons the work was successful is that the medium used to illustrate the science is completely non-threatening,‘ Storey explains. ‘The fact that it is fashion allows people who would normally be alienated from

science a doorway into it.‘

Primitive Streak’s merger of disparate disciplines has served as a launch pad for Storey since its inception in 1997, enabling a unique multithreaded practice that exists somewhere between textile design, conceptual art and scientific investigation. Mental, an oblique look at creativity and emotional response. now showing at the Glasgow Science Centre, moves further still from Storey‘s

fashion past.

‘My curiosity goes right across a number of disciplines,‘ says Storey. ‘I don‘t think that I will necessarily do any work that has anything to do with fashion and textiles again. Primitive Streak was a bridge between what I knew into this new world of science. As I get more and more enamoured with the world of science, it becomes less and less to do with my fashion heritage, and more and more to do with trying to build up new mechanisms of communicating

science to a lay public.‘

Primitive Streak is a chance to see some simply fabulous frocks, an enlightening look at the first stages of human life, and an insight into an unusual transition from acclaimed designer to artist-educator. Which is not something you see everyday. (Jack Mottram)
