OWEN O’NEILL

It‘s a wheeze as old as the hills. one that stand-up and writer Owen O'Neill took to its logical extreme when he enlisted 11 of his fellow funnymen to star in the intense American classic, 12 Angry Men.
Perversely. for a project that probably started life in O'Neill's fuddled mind following several wee nips, the Edinburgh run and tour proved a critical and commercial knockout. Director Guy Masterson wrested stunning performances from the unlikely likes of Bill Bailey. Phil Nichol and Jeff Green. with O‘Neill impressing in the pivotal role of Juror 8. The begetter — perhaps with the benefit of hindsight - claims to have never considered the venture a particular risk. ‘I had faith in all these guys before we did it,‘ explains O'Neill. ‘l‘ve worked with them through the years and when myself and Guy came up with the idea. every one of them said "Yes!" because it was a chance for them to get their teeth into some serious acting. Obviously I didn‘t think we would sell out. though. That was a lovely surprise.‘
O’Neill - performing his solo show in Scotland this month — does concede that 12 large talents collaborating on one project is challenging. particularly when those talents are accustomed to being their own bosses. ‘The big difference is the discipline. If you mess up it's like a domino effect; all the others fall down with you. And. yeah. that was a new experience for all of us.‘
It proved a particular challenge for O'Neill. who carved out his lonely
reputation appearing in his own one-man plays. ‘The reason I act in my plays is out of necessity. Often I‘ll come up with an idea and write it down and, because I can't afford a cast and director. I‘ll just end up doing the
