Hayrnt; just been to set.- the [inure lanrrly exhrbrtrort at the Natror‘al Gallery of Modern Art. and desprtt: rt lternt; a must see. Mt the gallery teelrnt; out of sorts and downbeat Why oh why do we always get rt so badly wrong? [)on't get rite narrong fantastrc, you mrttht raver: sa, a tantastrt: coup tor the Natrorral Galler'res. so \.'.'ll\, do they rrtsrst or‘. contrnrnt; these rnonuntenta; works to the 'létt’r‘tl‘.‘.’ corvdor lr‘ne contrnes ol the SNGMA'?

Boyle l‘arnrly's work ts ltor:l. full of rntellrgence. srncere and rrtade Wrth a hrgh degree ot skrll whrch rs (turte refreshrnr; as rt rs ar‘ element sadly lackrnt; rrt most Work torsted onto the publrc arena these days. Even the older frlm. pertotrrtartce artd experrmental pteces which ttll tlte early rooms rn thrs show would ptit most of tlte so called hrtth profrle contemporary conceptualrsts to shame. Whrle you wander round thrs show you r'ealrse how fresh rt rs. how uttedy now. and most rmportantly. the rntettrrty rt has.

Sadly tor Scotland. the show hrghlrghts how banal most of our current crop of arttashronados are wrth therr half-baked. badly cortcerved and executed works. Srmon Starlrng and Clare Barclay to name btrt two. hrghlrghted only because of therr rnyolyerttent as Scotland's current rer)resentatrves at Vertrce. suddenly look like tltrrd rate art school graduates by compar'rson.

So why rs thrs powerful monumental show squeezed rnto the small GMA gallerres when the new RSA burldrng Wrth rts hrgh cerlrngs. open spaces and state of the art lrghtrttg plays host to works a quarter of the SIM? of a 80er whrch would have been qurte at home rn the lower cerlrnged narrower gallerres ot the GMA. Clearly Clrfford and CalVOCOrOSSI must share the blame for thrs lack Of torQSrght. btrt perhaps Clrttord's excuse may be due to showblrndrtess after one too many Mortets.
