BUR Y www.dv8$cots.co.uk It's been quite a year for Burly, the Glasgow cruise club. which has just celebrated its first birthday at the Arches. Set up with two friends by the irrepressible Brian Johnston, Burly has been a real success story, moving from a small backroom in Partick to becoming the busiest night for the recently defunct Mercury. ‘We were tired of clubs on the commercial scene which called themselves gay but which were really mixed. Burly appeals to maturer, gayer. more sorted men.‘
The Arches is Burly‘s biggest venue to date, and Johnston admitted to being nervous and excited
beforehand, especially with the amount of financial outlay that was needed upfront. ‘Our members are very loyal. They've followed us all over, and we’re sure they'll follow us to our new home.‘ So far the new place is yet to be confirmed, but until a perfect spot is chosen, there will be special one-off ‘Burly visits . . . ’ events. Its popularity shows that Glasgow (and indeed Scotland) wants an alternative to the commercial gay scene with its emphasis on youth, where older men can dress up and be sexy.
In its first year. Burly has been host to many a dress-code night, including pants and boots, black leather, and the incredibly popular sportswear. Burly has provided demonstrations on the intricacies of the lighter side of S&M, a Mr Leather Beauty contest and even spanking displays. So if you fancy men in jockstraps, with thick beards or in kilts, get yourself there. Remarkably for such a sexy club, Burly’s atmosphere is not intimidating. Men really seem to talk to each other.
