Thomas Felhman
Kinky Afro has been providing the soundtrack to the atavistic clubbing experience for four strong years now. and this month the club invites Thomas Felman to sample its primitive delights. Happy birthday to the club that started out as a charity on a Tuesday night four years ago.
Dance veteran Felman is perhaps best known for his work with scene- definers the Orb, and is now well established as a DJ of delight. The Afro guys are bursting with admiration and anticipation at the thought of him playing their fine club. As Kinky Afro resident Matthew Bennet explains: ‘We brought him over for a night called Glasnost a while back, and we realised what an amazing DJ he was. He‘s an old guy with a lot of real insight. He won’t go above 150bpm, but he'll still have the place rockin‘. That’s the mark of a great DJ. It's really understated. he‘s not playing huge
tunes to fill the floor.’
Felman is rightly credited with forging important musical links between the twin cultural capitals of Berlin and Detroit. His releases on Apollo and, more recently, Kompakt, have inspired music lovers the world over. His sound will fit the bill at the Kinky Afro birthday party. As Matthew says: ' ‘We‘re really into that sound right now, the minimalist dub techno sound. It’s sparse but bassy, with a lot of percussion and a massive groove behind it. Our live drummers. especially those with the jembis. sound absolutely brilliant over that kind of music.’ (Johnny Regan)
