Remember remember the 5th of November. In fact, don’t, because this year’s Glasgow Green fireworks extravaganza is happening on the 6th. But why would Glasgow Council spit in the face of tradition, I hear you scream. Well, the UEFA Champions League match is happening at Parkhead on the Wednesday so the council decided it was best for all concerned to move

the fireworks to the Thursday.

Now that we’ve covered the scheduling detail, let’s have a quick history lesson. As well as being known as bonfire night, the 5th is also more traditionally known as Guy Fawkes night. In 1605, Fawkes, along with four other conspirators, stored 36 barrels of gunpowder in a cellar below the Houses of Parliament, ready to blow it up and reap revenge on James I for his intolerance of their Catholic beliefs. They hoped to kill the king, the Prince of Wales and members of Parliament, but word got out and while the others hot footed it away, Fawkes was caught, tried and executed.

Since then it has also been common to see an effigy of Fawkes burned on bonfires. Children used to make their own and ask for ‘a penny for the Guy’ but unfortunately today’s little tinkers just stick a football strip on their sisters’ teddy bear, intimidate a couple of quid out of you and spend it

on fags and Buckfast. Probably

Despite the change of date, the usual fun will be happening on the Green in the form of a sport-themed event with two tonnes of fireworks, video screens, Radio Clyde DJs and a fun fair. (Jane Hamilton)
