HARDCORE LENNY DEE

Nightmare on Queen Street at the Vaults, Glasgow, Sat 1 Nov

Fact: Industrial Strength is the most evil record label in the world. It pedals solely hardcore, gabba and thermo-nuclear techno. Only Industrial Strength would give refuge to brutally extreme acts like Disciples of Annihilation and Strychnine. And who is the overlord controlling all this carnage? That’s right, the main man himself, hardcore legend Lenny Dee.

So how come he’s such a nice bloke?

‘I just started playing techno and it progressively started getting harder and harder for me,’ explains the fast talking Brooklynite. ‘l was looking for a new fix so I started playing the records faster and faster, I just wanted to hear that kick drum.’ His enthusiasm, even after all these years, is unstoppable, and there’s a satanic glee in his voice as he recalls landmarks he forced on the dance music industry. He was instrumental in upping the intensity of the beast we call techno, and he practically invented hardcore. IS was the first hardcore techno label in the world.

‘l’m already getting goose bumps going up my arms, oh my God - I’m going back to the old stomping ground, I’m going up to Scotland, I’m gonna drink warm beer and get crazy with the boys.’ Of course, everyone says this when they talk to a Scottish mag, but with Lenny you can feel the excitement bubbling down the line. When he starts reciting stories about Rez, FuBar, Nosebleed and all the other clubs from hardcore’s golden years, you know he’s for real. ‘By the time I’m done with you in two hours you’ll be fucking finished you’ve heard so much grinding,’ says Dee launching into a noise not dissimilar to Godzilla levelling Tokyo. Just you wait till you hear the real thing cos you ain’t heard nothing yet.
