RYAN ADAMS Steady on, girls! Country rock’s premier playboy is back with his new album
proper, Rock’n’Ro/I, as well as a more subdued collection of broken-hearted love songs in Love is Hell. The Manhattan resident and celebrity Smiths obsessive is almost as prolific with his music as he is with his girlfriends (Winona Ryder, Beth Orton and now Parker Posey, for all you gossip column junkies). Adams’ seemingly willful truculence when it comes to promotion and flesh-pressing means that those well-deserved ‘Bruce Springsteen/Neil Young (delete as applicable) for the 21st century’ tags remain as yet unfulfilled. Ah, if only the world knew . . . for those who’ve caught the bug, any appearance is cause for celebration.
