60 THE LIST 13-27 Nov 2003

KEN VANDERMARK AND SCHOOL DAYS

The fertile Chicago scene has been recognised as a major hotbed for adventurous musical experiment in recent times, and saxophonist Ken Vandermark has been a leading figure in that development. He made his debut here with his own Vandermark 5 last year, but this time around he and his regular trombone man, Jeb Bishop, will team up with three Scandinavian musicians from the equally open-minded Nordic jazz scene (they took the School Days name from a tune performed by another sax/trombone-led combination, the Steve Lacy/Roswell Rudd Group). Don’t expect standards in swing time whatever they come up with, it will surely reflect an exciting contemporary sound and sensibility. (Kenny Mathieson)
