TECHNO GAYLE SAN Dogma at Studio 24, Fri 14 Nov

When you think of women in techno one name instantly springs to mind: Gayle San. The high priestess of ‘Detroit, Chicago, hard/pumping but groovy techno’, as she puts it. ‘When I started in 1988 it was really hard, I was just one of

a handful of female 0.13. A few years later after I did my club circuits, only then did people start showing interest and respect.’

She was an instant convert from the safer

realms of house when she heard Jeff Mills. ‘I remember getting hold of some of the early Detroit tunes and couldn’t get enough of them,’ she says. ‘I remember friends telling me at the time “nothing much ppening in that record, is there?” But to me it’s the simplicity of the music - driving and mesmerising - that got me hooked.’ Moving from Singapore in the late 803 she became a mainstay ' at the now legendary Universe nights in London. A night i where you could catch the likes of Carl Cox, Paul Oakenfold, LTJ Bukem and more on the same bill week in week out. In fact. San put in an all

night 45-minute back-to-back set with

Laurent Gamier on one occasion. ‘People

organised by the Universe team,’ says San.
