Of all the misguided sequels ever made (and boy. have there been a few mistakesi. John Boorman's appalling follow-up to one of the most genuinely shocking horror films ever is right up there. The only wise move he makes is to bodyswerve the wonderquy blasphemous gore of Friedkin's film. But in avoiding repetition he only succeeds in directing a script ‘latter than Linda Blair's chest. and elicits a ix3rformance from Richard Burton with more ‘.'./ood than the crucifix he metaphorically wields in Regan's face. The evil- carrying loCust has more charisma. May a curse fall on everyone involved in this drivel.

TV POLICE DRAMA THE SWEENEY - THE COMPLETE FIRST SERIES (15) 650min (Network DVD Retail) 0....

In these days of bland, homogenised television police dramas it is difficult to imagine a time when prime time ITV showed members of Her Majesty’s Constabulary Flying Squad threatening snouts, harassing and kidnapping their suspects and generally shagging as many air hostesses as they could get their nicotine-stained fingers on. Inspectors Reagan (John Thaw) and Carter (Dennis Waterman) did all this and more.

The Sweeney undoubtedly looks dated (these episodes were first broadcast in 1975) yet the tight, claustrophobic scripts by Trevor Preston and Troy Kennedy Martin (brother of Ian, the man who devised the original idea) exude a modernity and documentary grit that was to influence a generation of crime writers and programme makers (Tony Garnett’s Cops and Lynda La Plante’s Prime Suspect hail from this rich lineage). Episodes like ‘A Night Out’ and ‘Queens Pawn’ (the series highlight) make this box set one of the few 705 UK TV re-issues to really justify the ‘classic’ mantle. On top of this there is a wealth of extra features (including the rarely seen pilot sitcom written by one Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais).

Dirty Den may be back but if he’d tried anything in Reagan and Carter’s manor he would have been banged away on a ten stretch, before he could have said ‘hello princess’ (even if they’d had to fit him up to do it).
