PAPA DEEP & THE SOUL HUSTLERS Bamboo, Glasgow, Fri 28 Nov, Melting Pot, the Riverside Club, Glasgow,

Sat 29 Nov

There’s something amusingly Glaswegian about the way Papa Deep (Matthew Drummond) managed to hook up with Philadelphia-born vocalists the Soul Hustlers. ‘If I had known who they were I would probably never have approached them,’ he explains. ‘I was in a tiny club in Amsterdam with about 20 people and this couple were pouring their hearts out on stage. The DJ was playing tribal house, which they were turning into soul music.’

As it turns out the pair (Wendell A Morrisson Jr and his wife Marian Rolle) have worked with such figures as Leroy Burgess, Luther Vandross, Springsteen and Bobby Orlando. Drummond’s approach paid off and after a long chat they agreed to spend some time in the studio with him in Glasgow, where they will be performing two live dates, freestyling over Drummond’s house tracks at

Bamboo and Melting Pot. Meanwhile Wendell and Marian, currently working with Jocelyn Brown in London, don’t want to hear any of Drummond’s music until they arrive in Glasgow. Wendell explains their approach: ‘We hear the music the DJ plays, and we follow that vibe. It’s like a fear of the unknown, but the Lord knows when you get there it’s wonderful.’ (Kenny Hodgart)
