It’s late afternoon, the turkey’s eaten and the wrapping paper’s strewn over the floor. Even if you like the pageantry, Christmas can be a horrible time of year, full of dark evenings and shut pubs. Of course, the best thing to do with long nights is dance through them, something the boys from Ultragroove and Motherfunk know only too well.
The first Mothergroove, featuring Ultragroove’s classic house beats and Motherfunk’s mix of soul, funk and hip hop, took place three years ago. ‘We’ve known each other for ages - Fraser [from Ultragroove] and Gino were friendsfrom school,’ explains Ultragroove DJ Gareth Somerville. ‘Loads of our mates come down, DJs and promoters. It's a hardcore crowd, a proper club. The Christmas nights have been some of
the best parties we’ve put on.’
There will be no Christmas decorations. ‘Fuck that,’ says an aghast Somerville. ‘We just play the music.’ (James Smart)
