So many highlights. so little time: champagne quafting at a Cruise fashion show in Glasgow. watching the masses gather for a glimpse of Beyonce outside the Balmoral during the unforgettable pre-MTV ferv0ur. finding the Cat Stevens Tea for Tiller/nan album on vinyl (and a great tippling emporium) in the form of Glasgow's watering hole Mono . . . the list could and does go on. Strange then. that for a pretty lazy socialist. it's the Get Bush! rallies of late November that hang fast as a reminder of how proud I am to live in. and indeed write about. Scotland's capital city.

Standing amongst the enthusiastic hoards in Bristo Square fighting against George W Bush's trip to the UK worked as a powerful reminder that the events and organisations often given the least attention and space. are the ones which have the greatest effect on the people. And the capital was primed and ready to fight back; the eclectic array of people. a firm intimation that Scotland's voice has the power to be projected throughout the world. The march to the US Consulate later in the evening was done with equal fervour. while the Glasgow contingent was equally strong with anti—war stalwarts. Stop the War. at the helm. A firm reminder that. contrary to popular belief, we have ample conviction to give our London COLinterparts a run for their money.

Last but certainly not least. Lovely Person of the Year title has to go to author and gent. Alexander McCall Smith. Having been fortunate encugh to spend an hour with this true gem of a man waxing lyrical aboot WH Auden and Persian furniture ~ it is abundantly clear why his popularity is growing at such a vigorous pace. See our Top 100 should you need any more encouragement.
