83 Tilda Swinton

actress

Yeah OK. Tilda's cool. she lives in a nice house with the great playwright John Byrne near lnversnekkie. but so what? The lady is an immaCulate actress in her own right. After years of being better known as Derek Jarman's androgynous muse. she delivered two performances this year that put her in another league. She formed a new piece In Spike Jonze's jigsaw puzzle as Valerie Thomas in Adaptation. but it was as Ella Gault in David Mackenzie's adaptation of Young Adam that she proved her mettle as the wantonly controlling harpie wife of Les Gault. 82 Tommy Smith

jazz musician

Another year of major achievements for Scotland's top jazz musician. but at the cost of his marriage to saxophonist Laura MacDonald. Smith's workaholic tendencies were reflected in a string of ambitious projects for his own groups ~ not least the international sextet he toured in Scotland in November and the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra. not to forget his excellent Youth Orchestra. Whatever sniping he has to endure. Smith remains the primary catalyst and artistic achiever in Scottish jazz. and one of the select bands of Scots to have achieved a genuinely international standing. To say that the fifth instalment in the Harry Potter series was eagerly anticipated is an iinderstatement to rival ‘the big bang is difficult to explain'. Those who had put him down as Ewan McGregor's possible successor began to question their rashness. But then Sives landed two roles that played to his considerable acting strengths (Sives specialises in staunch macho neurosis). As the protagonist of Wilbur (Wants to Kill Himself) and in the forthcoming One Last Chance. Sives dominates two very strong casts. The boy is back on track again and he may just become a superstar. 78 Jay Feeney

club impresario

The old town fire affected the whole clubbing community in Edinburgh. NO one was hit hard the staff at La Belle Angele (and good to see Bobby Anderson back running the Honeycomb) but perhaps the next most affected was Jay Feeney. creative director at Cabaret Voltaire. Although the club wasn't actually damaged by the fire. access problems delayed its opening. That hasn't prevented the venue from becoming one of the coolest in town. with live acts and an eclectic clubs roster from the Brazilian party that is Say Samba! to the diversity of Dfrnt Drum and the cool house of Ultragroove. Not to mention his work with Freak MUSIC and Dynamic Blue. (HN)

Never has a regular feature in The List caused so much controversy. People love it (Twitch) and hate it (the Jengaheads) in equal meaSure. It's a twisted little cartoon that lampoons the Scottish club scene but has gone on to Surreal dissections of Lassie's retirement. how Alden Moffat went on to become King of the Weasels and the life of Reiki tramps. all pouring out of the minds and pens of Daniel Jackson and Michael Collin.
