Given that Strathclyde Uni isn’t noted for its spectacular DJ line-up, it would be easy to miss the appearance of ‘in demand’ DJ, Mark Ronson. And while some may be familiar with him through his ‘Oh Wee’ track, there is a lot more to him than a catchy tune. He’s the DJ you’ll find at the VIP parties: he’s P Diddy’s spinner of choice; he’s strutted the catwalk for Tommy Hilfiger; he’s engaged to one of Quincy Jones’ daughters and he taught Sean (son of John) Lennon to play guitar.
A Brit ex-pat living in New York, Mark’s musical heritage comes from his parents, most notably his two dads: his paternal father, a music manager, and his step-father, guitarist with 705 rockers Foreigner. A multi- instrumentalist by most people’s definition, Mark is keen to play down his musicality, citing hip hop as his true creative source and the music that turned him on to the art of DJing. Conversely, these two disciplines make up the musical concoction that is evident on his debut album Here Comes the Fuzz and in his DJ outings. As he explains: ‘If it’s got a good groove to it I don’t see any reason not to throw a track on cos it doesn’t fit a certain genre.
