Nicol Edwards. Edinburgh, Sun 11 Jan

Every city has its goth scene - it’s a thriving underground community that has existed for years. Edinburgh is no exception, with the likes of Ascension, Finsternis and the Mission. One of the newest players on the block, Gotham, is taking a slightly different angle by upping the fetish element, with a strict (and we mean very strict) door policy, fetish and gothic only, to ensure a safe environment. ‘This is a community event, not a voyeuristic one,’ points out promoter John Vassallo. ‘The main factor in doing this has been finding a venue liberal enough to let us do this. It‘s a club for fabby, beautiful people into body art, goth and alternative scenes. Gothic sexuality is sort of androgynous and ambivalent and our club is very inclusive and welcoming. But we are

essentially a music club at the core.‘

With respected DJs like DJX, Sublevel3, lan H and TEKHED supplying the darkwave, industrial and EBM sounds, this should appeal to everyone who likes their music pitch black. ‘We could bin all the fetish elements and just have those DJs on and it would still fill out the club,‘ according to Vassallo. But hey, then we’d miss out on delights such as the Ministry of Burlesque (‘a satirical burlesque dancing outfit’), films, art installations and way, way more. More of a lifestyle than just a club.
