CROSSOVER

MISSING

Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh, Sun 11 Jan & Sun 18 Jan

Taking on a club on any night outside of the punter-grabbing weekend night slots is always going to be tricky, but the residents behind the Cab’s regular Sunday night Missing are hoping to find their audience through the sheer good taste of the characters involved. A loose collective of Edinburgh DJs, their number includes Hobbes, Erik Da Viking (from Say Samba! and Dfrnt Drum), and DJ Astroboy of Departure Lounge.

‘Essentially the bottom line is that we’re all real enthusiasts,’ explains Hobbes. ‘We all want to just have a good time and listen to some good music that’s not like anything else you get in Edinburgh on the same night, and certainly not under the same roof. We draw from as many strands as we can the roots of good dance music at least as much as the dance music of today - and that includes funk, soul, jazz, Afro, Latin styles and other world music genres, particularly where there’s a fusion of styles.

‘But we’re not just interested in being “a really underground night” and playing tunes no-one’s heard of,’ he says. ‘A real inspiration for us was our Trouble at the Blue Note night, which was a successful and exciting night until the Cowgate fire closed the venue!

But does being on a Sunday have any effect on the club finding its crowd? ‘Not at all,’ says Hobbes. ‘Because we always aimed the night at people who generally party harder and better.’ (David Pollock)
