All things bright and beautiful

The light fantastic

Glasgow’s future looks bright this month as innovative installation project Highlights transforms a derelict tower block building into a series of impressive light displays inspired by local children’s designs and a specially commissioned poem by Scottish Poet Laureate. Edwin Morgan.

The brainchild of trainee architect Peter Smith. Highlights involves installing 220 special spot lamps in the west-facing side of one of two 23-storey high-rise blocks in the Gorbals that are due to be demolished later this year. Linked to a central computer. the lamps will be placed in each window of the top 20 storeys. Light sequences then animate the building.

Marking the end of an era. the project celebrates the inhabitants and the housing that have been such an important pan of Glasgow and this is a project by the community for the community. Following local research and a number of workshops earlier in the year. the inspiration for the light images is courtesy of local children at Gorbals An Project. And they are set to take centre stage as some of their voices appear as a graphic light display. alongside Edwin Morgan's poem ‘Old Gorbals’. written specially for the project.

I Frank McAveety MSP switches on the lights on Thu 25 Mar between 6. 75pm and 7pm at Cumberland St. the Gorbals.
