What does a girl have to do to get a date round here? You’ve lived the single life, never wanted to get too committed, broken a few hearts, had a lot of fun along the way, then barn! You’re in your late 205 and looking for love. But is the new phenomenon of speed dat.ng the answer?

When you’re younger and going out, copping off isn’t a problem. But the older you get, the more your social circle decreases. You can’t be bothered going out as much and the chances of finding a significant other is either through your friends or work. Speed dating, however, is being seen as the answer for those who are either having no luck - or just don’t have the time - to find Mr or Ms Right. The question is whether this is an event for the desperate or for those who just can’t be bothered with the crap of going out on the pull.

The continued success of straight speed dating events has been incredible, with most nights being sold out well in advance. Ever since Miranda went speed dating in Sex and the City it has gone from being a last resort to an acceptable thing to do. The same is happening for the gay version which has been set up by Mel Jarron of the Silver Card company, an organisation that aims to improve the social lives of young professionals.

Spotting a gap in the market, Jarron has set up what appears to be the first gay speed dating event in Scotland. The night will have an all female and all male event running at the same time and will follow the usual speed dating rules. You have three minutes to find out as much as you can about the other dater before you move on to the next person and do the same again. You tick the box of the boy or girl who you would like to date and, if they have done the same, it’s a match and you will be emailed the next day. If you don’t see anyone you like, there’s always next time, or you could just go out and chat someone up the old fashioned way. (Jane Hamilton)
