Who’s worth picking up on the singles market?

Cypress Hill ‘What’s Your Number’ (Columbia 0 ) A lesson in how to turn a sample from one of the best political songs ever (‘The Guns of Brixton') into some trash about picking up chicks.

Livesciences ‘Heroes’ (LVS ooo ) The Edinburgh hip hop collective show the Hill how it's done. Inclusive and expansive in its laid back scope. proving flutes. trombones and rap aren‘t mutually exclusive.

Basement Jaxx ‘Good Luck’ (XL 0000 ) Another irresistible sound-clash from Jaxx towers. Insatiany good as Lisa Kekaula‘s vocals kick your ass good and proper.

Freeland ‘Supernatural Thing’ (Marine Parade 00. ) Adam Freeland's cover of Ben E King's original transmogrified into a funked up beats monster in a David Holmes stylee.

Agoria ‘stereolove’ (Pias oooo ) Urgent. grinding, mutant disco. stabbing synths and robotronic vocals. Don’cha just love French techno?

N‘E'R'D ‘She Wants to Move’ (Virgin 00000) Hot and sultry hip hop from the Neptune‘s public face. Perfect for doing the nasty. Zero 7 ‘Home’ (Ultimate Dilemma oooo ) The only cut from Zero 7's latest LP that doesn't induce narcolepsy. Chilled in the right way and those vocals hit the spine tingling centre just so. Stereotype ‘Soul for Your Stereo’ (Surface Pressure

000 ) Well the title says it all as this Scottish collective lay down some serious jazzy vibes while Finale and Dee J A'la Fu lay down the raps.

Rennie Pilgrim ‘Defender’ (TCR oo ) Old school tea dances mix with drum & bass rhythms. picks up in the middle but this feels old ('Vox' version is even more ancient). Has the breakboat king lost his touch?

Insignificant Others ‘Milk’ (Skyline 0.. ) Jackin' funky electro with a demure housey edge. Bit too long and repetitive mind y0u. (Henry Northmore)

NOSTALGIA BIG SCHOOL Venue, Edinburgh, Sat 20 Mar

‘I think the night speaks for itself really,’ says Trendy Wendy, headmistress of the Venue’s new Big School night. ‘I’ve done a school disco and a school reunion at Tackno and they've been absolutely massive. I suppose

everyone loves getting a caning.’

With chat like that, you can be sure this night does exactly what it says on the flyer. There’s no hidden agenda or arch irony here, just the finest nostalgic cheese and a crowd getting into the scholastic spirit with some

frankly fetishistic high school clobber.

‘I can guarantee it won’t be like any other Old School night,’ Wendy says sternly (possibly getting in practice there). ‘The music we [\Nendy, Nick Silver, Lenny Love] play is much more imaginative than that, plus the fact it’s the Venue means we’ll have a whole different crowd. Everyone I’ve spoken to is really up for it, from house to hip hop people. Anyway, who says all clubs have to be serious? We just want a laugh.’ (David Pollock)

I The Subway at Subway. 7pm 3am. £l. Weekly. Nigh on a (‘owgate institution of commercial dance and chart hits with the odd indie classic.
