Peaches

One nubile lady jetting her way into Scotland this month has already arrived as a massive gay icon. Peaches (aka Merrill Nisker), the Canadian- born singer, has invited us, through her anthems, to ‘Fuck The Pain Away’, ‘Set It Off’, and even, ‘Shake Your Dix’ on the dance floor.

A purveyor of raunchy lyrics and hairy armpits, she’s put the cheek into queer chic, while also managing to acquire a wider fan base of hip hoppers, headbangers, punks and post-feminists. Her sound has been described as ‘explicit prankster rap’, and when she appears at the Liquid Rooms in Edinburgh on 15 April it’ll be a chance to enjoy a unique artist who is unlike anything else you’ll hear on the planet.

The fact that she produces her records, programs her own beats and plays almost all the instruments further cements her status as a woman for whom the concept of expressive art is everything.

Since her debut album, The Teaches of Peaches, was released on a small German label, Kitty-Yo, in 2000 she has duetted with lggy Pop, played a beat poet in a John Malkovich short, The Hideous Man and even had her breasts immortalised in plaster by groupie artist Cynthia Plastercaster.

This month also sees an appearance by Britney Spears at the Scottish Exhibition Centre in Glasgow on 30 April. Gay club-goers have more than a passing acquaintance with the commercial sound of Miss Spears, a woman whose very public snog with Madonna endeared her to the gay community. But it would be difficult to envisage a more different performer to the divine Peaches. While Britney’s music makes you want to shake your booty, Peaches creates a soundtrack to get your end away to. Their only similarity, in fact, is the ability to attract an adulation usually reserved for Kylie Minogue or the late Judy Garland.

But while the gay super-icons field looks close to over-crowding, spare a thought (and maybe a dime) for a doyenne of gay spiritual music (is disco). The UK label Honest Jons has released a 26-track CD of Candi Staton’s recordings. Staton’s mid-19705 hits, ‘Young Hearts Run Free’, and ‘Vtctim' transformed the former R&B singer into the greatest disco diva of her generation. It also includes her excellent renditions of ‘That’s How Strong My Love ls’, and ‘l’d Rather Be An Old Man’s Sweetheart (Than a Young Man’s Fool)’. (Brian McGeachan)
