STAND-UP TANYALEE DAVIS The Stand, Edinburgh, Fri 30 Apr & Sun 2 May

There are three questions people often ask of Tanyalee Davis which really get her goat. ‘How do you have sex with your husband?’, “where do you get your clothes from?’ and ‘were you born that size?’ She has perfect comeback answers to them all. ‘He puts his dick in my vagina’, ‘from the shops’ and ‘no, I was much smaller.’

When you’re 3ft 6” tall (or small), having a sense of humour comes in handy. But becoming a professional stand-up comedian takes real

Bundle of joy

balls. She made her first stage appearance aged 19 (she’s now a sprightly 33 with a degree in criminology and sociology) and her first joke was a warning to the audience that a midget was reported to be loose in the auditorium. Just a few gigs into her career, and rave reviews were gaining her an unwanted audience. ‘My mum showed up and she brought the neighbours and my aunts. I just lost it; they suggested that I may want to

do something else.’

Yet, Davis persevered and her steady climb to the top of her wee stand- up tree saw her arrive here during last year’s Fringe as part of the US Comedy Invasion. Reviews were not universally great for the group show, but having worked beside murderers in a men’s prison, Davis is tough enough to brush off critical brickbats. ‘US comedy is on a new boom. One of the effects of 9/11 is that people needed to get away from their television sets and so more clubs were opening up and more and more new comics were coming through.’ All good things come in small packages. Tanyalee Davis may well be the living proof. (Brian Donaldson)
