Some things that are truly subversive can survive being branded as trendy. Optimo, for example. The reason? It evades definition, and if something can’t be defined then trying to fit it into a trend is pretty futile. ‘It only becomes a scene when the media latch on and say it’s a scene,’ explains
resident Twitch.
Twitch insists that he and Jonnie (Wilkes) are ‘both natural pessimists, we always think the backlash is coming.’ But they’re not losing too much sleep over it. ‘It doesn’t matter as long as we’re enjoying ourselves,’ he
adds with a smile.
It is this punk rock attitude and the thrill of collision lying behind their DJ sets that move so effortlessly between Blondie, Green Velvet, Duelling Banjos, glitchy whorehouse and evangelical electro. And if the DJ sets sometimes resemble a muso having an argument with his record collection, their guests are more akin to musicians scrapping with their instruments. Which brings us to their guest on 2 May, Midnight Mike
(Output Records). But this is Optimo so he won’t be DJing - instead he’ll be
