Hairy hilarity

On 19 June 1843, Karl Marx married his love Jenny von Westphalen. On the same day in 1937, JM Barrie died aged 77. Exactly 16 years later Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed at the hands of the US government for being ‘enemies of the state’. Two years after that, Nick Drake started his short, tragic, influential life. Then there was a gap, 3 break in the waves, until in 1978, one dark and stormy night, a boychild was carried into the dank Yorkshire air and held up to feel the profanity and vulgarity of all mankind. They called him Daniel Kitson.

0K, sorry, got a bit Alex Haley there and none of these things are really connected; they just so happen to have happened on the same day, but you know Kitson would somehow be able to bring them together. If he wanted to. But Kitson never really seems to do anything other than moan a lot and (more importantly) hone his comic craft. His 2003 show, Something, was a brave departure from the slowfire belly laugh-in he delivered up the previous year for his Perrier Award-winning set but it was no less interesting. Called A Made Up Story, it told the Jackanory-ish tale of Dora: a misfit in an ugly world trying to find love.

God knows what he will deliver this time but have no doubt that it will be a gift offered up from hours of hard work and quirky deliberation by a very

hairy man. (Paul Dale)
