event was held in Fort William, but in that time the organisers have managed to bag four awards from the International Cycle Union and brought in over 15,000 spectators each year. On 5 and 6 June this year, the town is going to be transformed for a third time and looks set to host an even bigger and

better competition.

The Fort William weekend is the third of eight World Cup competitions where cyclists accumulate points to establish the world rankings. It is also the first in the series to offer all three disciplines - X-Country, Downhill and 4-Cross - as the first two events in Spain and Belgium only involve the former. There are a number of strong British contenders in this year’s Downhill competitions, including 2002 World Cup champion Steve Peat, as well as Fionn Griffiths and Tracy Moseley in the women’s Downhill.

The event opens on the Saturday with the X-Country competitions, involving a gruelling two hour slog around the Witches Trail and testing every aspect of the riders’ abilities. The Downhill competition takes place on the Sunday, following one of the longest and toughest tracks on the World Cup circuit, but for race director Mike Jardine, the highlight of the weekend is the 4-X final on the Saturday evening, which is held on a relatively tiny 200m slope. ‘It’s four people racing head-to-head over a series of jumps and other obstacles, making it a really gladiatorial event. There’s a huge sea of people there watching it with these guys just jumping up into the air above them.’ So although seeing the pros perform is probably the most exciting part of the competition for many, there is also the chance for club riders to compete in the Alpine Bikes World Cup Chaser and compare their times on

the Witches Trail with their heroes.

While Jardine hopes that Fort William will continue to host World Cup Events in the future, the real focus now is the bid to host the Olympics of the Mountain Biking Calendar - the 2007 World Championships. (Rachael Street)
