Most dance companies claim to care about their audience, but few are as committed as George Piper. Formed in 2001 by ex-Royal Ballet dancers, Michael Nunn and William Trevitt, the company watchword has been quality right from the start. The best choreographers, the best dancers and, thanks to some hilarious film footage, the best laugh you’ll have at a dance show all year. Having cut their teeth making two video diaries for Channel 4, Trevitt and Nunn - aka the ‘Ballet Boyz’ - now incorporate their camcorder adventures in all their shows. So alongside three exquisite works by Russell Maliphant, William Forsythe and the wonderful Christopher Wheeldon, we have background info on how the three dances came together. Forsythe, somehow demystifies the whole creative process. So when we see the final, polished product up on stage, danced by Trevitt, Nunn and three equally stunning dancers, we begin to understand just how much hard work, organisation and fun goes into creating and learning these works. Maliphant’s Broken Fall recently won the company an Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production and Forsythe’s Approximate Sonata I,V gives breathtaking dancer Oxana Panchenko a real chance to shine.
