INDIE PINUP NIGHTS

Queen’s Club, Glasgow, Fri 11 Jun

There’s a lot to be said for simplicity when it comes to playing records. Recently, DJs have been reverting to primitive mixing and more track-based grooves, even in house and techno clubs. In the land of the indie club, however, simply playing great track after great track (sans complicated mixing) is something that’s never gone out of fashion. ‘We started the night because nowhere in town played the songs that we wanted to hear,’ says Pinup Nights’ resident John D. ‘lt’s for people who are fed up with places like the Shack or the Garage. I will boldly say that we play the best selection of

music in Glasgow on a Friday night.’

Pinup Nights graduates to full-blown club status this month (after a year of pre-club action in Blackfriars), and does what any self-respecting guitar club should, moving into an unusual social club venue to demarcate the change- over. Their musical policy encompasses punk rock, reggae, soul and ska,

and they don’t care if the set-list takes in Van Halen, the Jam, REM or Ara Strap. Speaking of which, that band’s Malcolm Middleton makes his firs

DJ appearance at this very night to mark their first birthday party. (Johnny Regan).
