VARIOUS FETE DE LA MUSIQUE
Oran Mor, Glasgow, Mon 21 Jun see
‘It’s good to be ‘ere! Excuse my accent!’ Kicking off Oran Mor’s contribution to the Fete de la Musique, a series of international music events including more than 100 countries, French rockers Da Brasilians make an endearing and competent stab at covering decades of rock’n’roll history - albeit with an elderly, beardy, tweed- jacketed Bez-type figure in tow - and do their bit to promote international relations by singing in both English and French.
West Enders Wake the President bring a welcome element of French chic, Erik and Bjorn Sandberg all dapper in matching shirts and jackets, and bestowing respectable U2/Stone Roses-style climactic acoustica on the audience. After an all too brief appearance by Invisible Jim (as it were), various delays and technical problems mean it’s only the hardcore/layabout

student contingent who stay around for the rest.
My Latest Novel’s twee, disingenuous art school rock feels like an exercise in tolerance both for the eyes and ears - looking like models for a garish 60$ knitting catalogue and sounding like Arab Strap meets Pink Floyd in the foolhardy guise of three guitarists, a drummer and a violinist.
But help is at hand in the form of headliners Red Bee Society. They don’t take to the stage till well after midnight, by which time a thinned out but nevertheless respectable audience remains: it’s a shame their expansive and charismatic brand of rock wasn’t heard by more, as vast vocals, a wee bit of dancing and some very enthusiastic guitar wielding add up to a pretty
good way to end an evening. Encore! (Emma Newlands)

. It's an unfortunate byproduct of billing BR549 as a hillbilly band that we can't help but conjure an image of them as l toothless. tourist-buggering rednecks in a De/iverance stylee. Sighs of collective relief resound. then, when we find that the quintet look just like any other band — right down to the double-bassist's Ramones T-shirt. Not only that. but they sound refreshingly different with Don Herron's pedal-steel guitar and the whooping vocals of Chuck Mead and Chris Scruggs : (grandson of Earl). and squeezed as I many songs out of the set as possible, bringing a great hoedown

JAMIE CULLUM eee TOM BAXTER eee
Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Mon 5 Jul
It's all polite rock from opener Tom Baxter, acoustic-led sounds in a Damien Rice style. Sometimes it's bordering on emotional cliche but ‘This Boy' and ‘Almost There' hit their mark with understated precision. Then the chipmunk-faced-coffee- table-jazz-unit-shifter bounds on stage. Cullum specialises in jazz for people who don't like jazz. any challenging edges smoothed off with
pop accessibility. Mainly playing
Cullum makes a splash
covers from Cole Porter's ‘I Get a Kick Out of You“ to N'E'R'D's ‘Frontin" - his own ragged interpretations but covers nonetheless. He's famed for playing directly on the strings or drumming on his piano and while entertaining. it sounds a bit crap. But he's a very watchable performer. an accomplished pianist and his version of Radiohead's ‘High and Dry' morphing into “Singing in the Rain' was a
real highlight (and yes, bizarrely it did work). (Henry Northmore)
