THE THERMALS

Beat this, all you lo-fi-loving indier than thou types; Portland, Oregon trio the Thermals recorded their debut More Parts Per Million in guitarist Hutch Harris’ kitchen on a cassette purchased at K-Mart. Now it surely doesn’t get more underground than that? As a result their latest effort Fuckin A on Sub Pop seems positively mainstream in its catchy distortion-fuelled fuzzy magnificence. Its 12 brief tracks, the longest weighing in at just over three minutes, prove their makers to be an extremely tuneful, heartfelt and beautifully ramshackle bunch set to make teary Guided By Voices fans distraught at their heroes’ recent split feel a helluva lot better.
