The fact that everyone’s a goddamn comedian is largely, and with reason, considered ugly and regrettable. In most situations, jackleg humorists are to be avoided like clouds of leprosy spores or, better yet, muzzled. But the

fact remains. We love cracking wise.

From the outset, then, the smart money was on There’s Yer Dinner’s new comedy ‘format’, The Edinburgh Edition. At bottom it’s a table quiz, with the signal differences that all questions are current and topical, and more points are awarded for funny answers than correct ones. In other words, it’s a satirical TV quiz show transplanted to the pub.

The ‘Editor’ for the night the show borrows its terminology from newspapers - was the furiously enthusiastic Stuart Hall. He took the participants through five rounds of questions, captions and headlines, all familiar to anyone who has seen Have I Got News for You. And here’s the funny thing: the answers were pretty funny. Some tables were content to crank out opaque in-jokes (hilarious to them, fatuous to everyone else) but others were making an effort, and sometimes succeeding.

To take the pressure off these fledging wags, the show was broken up by a brace of stand-up acts. John Burns, while reasonably comfortable in the light, needs a lot more polish on delivery and material. Following him was seasoned Aussie gagman Kieran Butler, whose music-peppered material was tight, well-observed and exuberantly filthy.

Then it was back to the quiz and the participants, buoyed perhaps by the ‘real’ comedy, answered, captioned and headlined with fresh brio. The Edinburgh Edition is an inventive, inclusive show, and though still beset by plenty rough edges, it makes for different and enjoyable entertainment. For goddamn comedians everywhere. (Sam Healy)
