‘Joy is a club for gay people and their straight friends,’ says promoter Maggie Joy. ‘That’s what we’ve always referred to it as. But that basically means anyone with the right attitude is welcome. I think that’s why we’ve lasted so long; we’d rather have 400 people in and turn half that away again to make sure everyone has a fun, hassle-free night.’

Joy has indeed lasted - 11 years and counting - but it so nearly wasn’t the way. The first launch night at the old Calton Studios didn’t go so well for Maggie and partner Alan Joy (that’s business partner, for those trying to perpetuate the old myth that they’re married) with only 50 people turning up. At the time involved in the Blue Moon Cafe and its infamous parties, the pair decided to try one more time. The result? A good 600 bodies through

the door.

‘The gay scene is constantly evolving,’ explains Maggie. ‘And I think we’ve managed to stay successful by getting out there and seeing what’s happening and paying attention to what people want.’ What that means for this 11th birthday bonanza is sets by local regular Trendy Wendy and guest DJ Queen Maxine. ‘Maxine’s an old friend of ours,’ says Maggie. ‘I first played with her in the old Scottish Parliament in 1995. When we got her back to Joy, 1200 people came, which was a record even for the Calton Studios. Maxine was blown away, I always remember her telling me it was like 3 Take That concert.’ (David Pollock)
