40 THE LIST '2 T."

SUPERFLY The Woodsrde Social. Glasgow. Sat 7 Aug

On hearing that The List intended to run a feature on Superfly. founder Duncan Birrel responded with a hearty ‘about bloody time.‘ Maybe he‘s right. This West End institution has been wowing the crowds for three years now, and yet the Superfly party is still regarded as something of a cult classic. something for which one acquires a taste.

Superfly started up in 2001 and instantly provided that splash of colour that West End nightlife can sometimes lack. Unashamedly retro, the party pre-empted a lot of current clubs by incorporating live acts into the proceedings. It had pop-art slide shows, a wildly funky soundtrack and an aesthetic all of its own. How many clubs can claim to have taken their cue from Cabaret Voltaire and the Auberge-Iounging surrealists of early 20th

century France?

Remembering some of the more conventional Superfly moments, Birrel says: ‘I once raffled my parents. Another time. we gave away a caravan as a prize. The other resident, Ian Lamarra, once looked down from the stage to see me dressed up as Andy Warhol, someone dressed as Audrey Hepburn and an Elvis impersonator locked in conversation. It was a visual metaphor for the juxtaposition of images and sounds that happens at Superfly.‘
