THE DUKE SPIRIT

Combining good looks with some super trendy threads and a singer boasting the scratchy longing-ridden vocals of an early PJ Harvey (without the mad bits), the Duke Spirit are a hype machine's dream. The London-based quintet formed at the beginning of 2003 and, by September, had already put out promising mini-LP Roll, Spirit, Roll, featuring an impressive selection of clattering guitar pop gems. But nothing was to prepare us for their intense live shows, which saw the band’s crunchy riffs, tense rhythms and snaking melodies whipped up into a frenzy around a magnetic performance from a harmonica- wielding Liela Moss. Look up your sons, and your daughters for that matte - once you’ve seen this lot there's no going back. (Camilla Pia)
