‘Much like life, theatre’s just one big lucky dip.‘ As Arches Live prepares to embark on its third year, arts programmer Jean Cameron affords a well-timed reminder that Edinburgh isn‘t the only city to provide the goodies when it comes to all things creative. Since its inaugural outing, the Arches' mini arts festival has set its own agenda, showcasing a series of Scottish premieres and heralding the arrival of an array of fresh new blood. This year’s line-up looks sufficiently hearty. ‘lt’s been a very organic process.‘ says Cameron. ‘Lots of the performers and crew came through the artists’ forum at the Arches, so there’s a really warm feeling of camaraderie here.‘

And any worries of being overshadowed by the might of its Fringe predecessor is quickly dismissed. ‘The Fringe allows us room to breath in Glasgow. There’s a myriad of places for the individuals and companies to rehearse over August if they’re not already showcasing their wares at the Fringe - so the performers can really connect with the space and work in advance.’ This year’s line-up certainly makes for a pretty varied mix. From installation - Sarah Potter’s Silk Retreat challenges notions of comfort by showcasing a spider’s web with a tank of spiders alongside a tea- sharing massage workshop to theatre, each piece channels its energies into looking at the idea of belonging, identity and the wider context of community.

Post Eclectic Pre-Man examines gender politics seen through the eyes of a real life father and (baby) son, exploring ideas of maleness and masculinity, while Crack Theatre’s How To Eat looks at

the wonderfully perverse relationship the media has with body image as Lynsey Murdoch presents

her show with a backdrop of ‘perfect’ images emblazoned on the walls. And that’s just to nibble on.

Richard Dedomenici’s Sexed Up takes a glimpse at fear culture, revisiting his previous speculations

about the possibilities of Edinburgh Castle’s cannons attacking the New Scottish Parliament, and that's to not even scratch the surface of Randomaccomplice, Theatre Modo, Highway Diner’s or Amex Bradley’s wholesome offerings. So much choice, so little time. (Anna Millar)
