ADVENTURE spear SCAD JUMPING

sportGlistcoaik

This weekend SCAD jumping comes to Edinburgh for the first time. Here jump organiser Sophia Fraser explains how it works.

c

So. what does SCAD st nd for? Suspended Catch Air Device

What on earth is that? It's a bit like bungee lumping. except mthout ropes Participants Will be taken to the top of a 1:30 toot crane and then tree tail w'tto a (very sophisticated) net suspended above the ground.

But what if you miss it? Don't worry! The Controlled Free i‘aii harness ensures that the correct body position is maintained to ensure a safe landing. Delibeiate attempts to turn or spin the body out of this position are impossible.

But surely hitting the net must be quite painful? the air tubes and brake Suspensions around the net stop the fall so gently that you feel no impact at all, How long has this been happening? The first drop took place from a helicopter in April 1997. at Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany

And how many people have tried it since then? Over 120.000 safety record (not even a broken finger naili.

Willi a 100

But I can‘t imagine anyone goes back for a second go Some do ~ a guy who went to the last SCAD event in Aberdeen did it three times.

OK, but how much does it cost? $40

That's not bad, but really, why should I put myself through all that? PartiCipants are encouraged to do a sponsored Jump and raise money for OneCity Trust. which distributes grants to grass roots organisations and small charities who tackle social exclusion in Edinburgh. The fundraising target is $7100 but anything

over the 5340 registration fee is great.

So where and when is this taking place? Saturday t 1 Sep in lnverleith Park.

Edinburgh between 10am—6pm.

Can I just turn up on the day? Absolutely. If there are still places available you Will be able to have a go. but we expect to fill them all in advance. However. it Will still

definitely be worth a ViSit Just to watch.

How do I find out more? Call or email Sophia Fraser at the OneCity Trust: 01 3t
