Someone’s got to save it
Byung-gu (Ha-kyun Shin from Sympathy for Mr Vengeance) has got it into his lonely, mad head that everything wrong with life on earth is the fault of alien interference from the Andromeda Galaxy. Not only that, but aliens from there are planning to enslave and eventually destroy the earth, and have sent one of their own on ahead to prepare for invasion.
Byung-gu decides that the only way to avert imminent destruction is to meet with the Prince of Andromeda before the next total lunar eclipse, although this is something he can only achieve through an extraterrestrial living on Earth. With this knowledge and little else, he kidnaps and tortures Man-shik Kang (Yun-shik Baek), president of the Yoojae Chemical Company, convinced that this corporate boss is the alien ambassador he needs. Strangely, however, no amount of cheese-graters or electrocution
will alter the terrified human‘s story.
Right from the start, the film pulls off the pretty neat trick of generating sympathy for almost everyone involved, particularly Byung-gu’s innocent and devoted wife Su-ni (Jeong-min Hwang) who becomes increasingly unsure whether her husband is mankind’s last line of defence or a violent,
delusional and dangerous loony.
Touching, messy, laugh-out-loud funny and utterly endearing, Save the Green Planet! is a total delight and something of a gem of a debut film. First-time feature director Jun-hwan Jeong expertly manipulates our shifting loyalties right up until the movie’s wrenching conclusion.
