BLUES EXPLOSION

The Jon Spencer may be gone from the name but the ability to rock remains. Spencer and his cohorts have been happily kicking out selected blues jams with finesse for many years now. That the White Stripes completely stole their thunder on being everyone‘s favourite raggedy. bass—less garage band is a bit of a moot point these days as Spencer has been quietly redefining the Blues Explosion as the missing link between Howlin’ Wolf and Public Enemy as album Damage and its predecessors will testify. Excellent collaborations with DJ Shadow. David Holmes and Dan the Automator among others mean there‘s much more to this band than just plain ol‘ blues. (Mark Robertson)
