'There's clubs and then there’s clubs. The nightclub is hugely underrated as a medium. It's a bit like art. There‘s design art. which is utilitarian, facilitating, and then there‘s visual art which is purely creative, offering people something outwith their usual experience. I think we are that kind of club.’ If you couldn‘t tell, Glasgow‘s thriving northern soul and mod scene means a lot to Caledonia Soul founder and creative head honcho Scotch Martin. His club. celebrating its third birthday this month, along with Friday Street, Afterglow, Goodtoot and the nights at Mchuills in the east end of the city centre, make a vibrant collection. You'd be hard pushed to find a group of club promoters more dedicated to a kind of music. a scene, a way of lite: ‘l was a mod in the late 705, early 805. and the scene then was as big, if not bigger than the dance ever was in this country. I always see northern soul as the mods switching their focus from fashion to music.‘ And don't think that the scene is trapped in some kind of time warp, either.
